EMERGENCY RALLY: PEOPLE OF NEW YORK, STOP "UNITY AND PEACE" & SHUT DOWN RIKERS NOW!
Activists & Community Members Protest For Solutions/Solidarity Between Black and Brown Communities &
Human Rights Crisis at NYC Jail Complex
WHAT: The Campaign to ShutDownRikers (SDR) and Black Lives Matter NY and other activists calls for the communities of New York to come together To "PROMOTE PEACE" & What This Really Means.
Yes, the Black family has certainly taken a toll in recent decades, and obviously, there have been consequences for the Black community at large. Still, when school shootings take place at predominately White schools in suburbia, why is the narrative often a call for wider mental health versus a character assassination on the parents and communities who produced their own brand of murderers? Moreover, while government can’t “fill the hole” of the heart of a child killer, it most certainly plays a crucial part in creating the kind of nihilistic mind-set that makes so many young Black men feel that empty by its lack of action.
WHO: Family members of victims of correction officer brutality on Rikers, individuals previously incarcerated on Rikers, Black Lives Matter movement activists, anti-police brutality activists, jail reform and human rights advocates, and other community members and leaders. Speakers: Akeem Browder, brother of Kalief Browder and Campaign to SDR member.
The Campaign to Shut Down Rikers is a New York City grassroots coalition of activists and organizations dedicated to organizing for the immediate shut down of the Rikers Island Jail Complex. ###
